Shan Coughlin, host of Amateur Golf Talk LIVE!, welcomes Talamore Golf Resort’s own John McDougald to talk about Llamas, Pinehurst, the Talamore Golf Resort and more including his cover on Golf Business Magazine.
Talamore’s Resort Course opened its doors in 1991. John tells the story that once he took the Head Professional job with Talamore there were two surprises; 1 – they would not compete with Pinehurst, their next door neighbor, and 2 – they would have Llama caddies. While the opening of the Rees Jones design was highly anticipated it was these llama caddies that stole the show. Hear how the llamas came to be and where they live now by listening to this entire interview.
The word “Talamore” is of Gaelic origin and means “Land of great value”. Bob Levy started Talamore with the ambition to have all of his properties contain the name Talamore. There are currently four Talamore properties, two in Pinehurst and two in Pennsylvania. In Pinehurst, the Jones course is the original 18 holes and the Palmer course is open to members and in house guests and has been part of the family for the past 10 years. Being named best resort in the area by the other clubs in Pinehurst gave even more credence and status to the facility. Peers are normally much more selective in their votes. With the US Open coming to town, Talamore and the llamas are sure to get their share of attention.
New to the resort is a barbecue pavilion which serves as a meeting place following guest round(s) of golf to relax. As John says, it was really designed for the guy who is done playing golf. Finally it’s dark and he can’t play any more, but instead of having to dress for dinner like at neighboring resorts, he can kick back and be comfortable as his back is killing him and he’s just looking for a place to sit and stick his hand in a cooler. There are grills open for use and special events planned like the pig pickin’ during Masters weekend.
With so much history and John’s stories of his butting heads with Rees Jones and meeting Arnold Palmer, topped with his story of Augusta and a conversation with Jack Nicklaus, this is a can’t miss interview.
